It started off about 4 years ago in a curiosity to understand the origins of the Indian Constitution. There is a predominant theory that we copied our Constitution - but why did that take 2 Years 11 months and 17 days? That was the question.
In 1946 at the fag end of the Indian freedom struggle, the British decide to leave India. On 9 December 1946 the Assembly began drafting the constitution its first session.
296 members over 2 Years 11 months and 17 days, after much deliberation and debate drafted our constitution. If you are interested to see what were discussed during around this, check out this 10 part video series called Samvidhaan. For the full transcript of the constituent assembly debates, click here.
1,000 copies of this work of art - created by the artists at Shantiniketan - were distributed to senior members of the parliament, supreme court judges, high court and important people in the Indian political landscape.
Fast forward 70+ years, only few remain and the ones that survive are kept in helium containers to be preserved. If you ever get to see the copy, you'd realize why it is a pity that such a piece of art shouldn’t be under a glass container. A copy of the original was auctioned in London for 35 lakhs!
We wanted to re-create this work of art as close to the original, for our generation and that is to come, to revel this historical national treasure.
It took us 3 years of work to painstakingly create these copies.
